Paradigm Shift: Pluto Enters Aquarius

A version of this piece first appeared as an article in the Spring 2023 issue of the New Earth Almanac and published on this website on January 16, 2024. Updates were made to this post on November 10, 2024.

Although Pluto is a relatively small planet orbiting the chilly outer reaches of the galaxy, this planet symbolizes power dynamics, deep transformation, breakdowns, and breakthroughs— in a word: Death. Pluto is known as the Lord of the Underworld for a reason.

But death is a necessary part of the cycles of life: life/death/life. We watch as the seasons shift—first tiny buds appear on the trees, then leaves sprout, dancing with life on summer breezes, to soon reach their finale in reds and golds before withering and falling from the trees, leaving bare skeletons against stark winter skies.

Yet those crumpled leaves nurture future life. Those dormant trees will sprout new leaves again next spring. Life to death to life.

What does Pluto mean as an astrological energy? How does it affect you and me and the world we call home? Pluto was discovered around the time of the atomic bomb; hence it is associated with an energy that can annihilate everything we have ever known.

In our personal lives, Pluto typically brings deep transformation. Changes well up from deep in our unconscious, or deep within certain areas of our lives—like a volcano erupting often without warning. Or perhaps, something we thought we knew to be true and lasting sinks quietly and mercilessly like the Titanic.

Yet once Pluto has rolled through, bringing these powerful changes in its wake, we see that our lives are changed in ways we couldn’t have imagined, often for the better. Or we may decide later, that they were for the better. But we might not always agree that it feels that way in the moment (or ever). Losing people we love, having our financial footing upended, and being forced to change our way of being — these are not easy matters.

We heal and we are transformed. We are burnished ever brighter, developing a rich patina that only time can bring.

Pluto travels slowly, taking about 248 years to complete a cycle. Because of this, it spends roughly 15 to 20 years in a Zodiac sign. In March of 2023, Pluto moved from the earth-based energy of Capricorn into the air sign Aquarius. However, this has been a bit of a bumpy transition as Pluto then retrograded back into Capricorn through October 2023 before moving direct again.

Pluto will re-enter Aquarius at 6:57 p.m. Central time on January 20, 2024, only to slip back into Capricorn once again in September 2024 and then move direct again by October 2024. I suspect that those months of dipping forward and backward will be a time of upheaval as we see some stark rumblings of a major transition into a new societal era. The old crumbles to make way for the new.

Full-Speed Ahead

Pluto will finally move into Aquarius for the long haul in November 2024 where it will remain for the next 20 years until late January of 2044.

Power to the People

For context, the last time Pluto traveled through the sign of Aquarius was during the time of the French and American Revolution. This combination of Pluto within Aquarius brings with it the power of collective revolution and change: “power to the people.”

Pluto has been slogging through Capricorn since 2008, slowly fracturing and breaking down old, worn-out earth-based systems, most notably the financial system, government, and education. As we leave Capricorn and move into Aquarius, that cycle completes and enters into a new cycle that seeks to overhaul these “old” systems.

Aquarius is a humanitarian-focused energy that brings innovation and new ways of doing things. However, it is, essentially, about the collective. It is an “air” sign, which means a focus or interface that is intellectual, mental, scientific, and technological. Pluto will transform these areas of our lives over the next two decades.

We are already seeing the rumblings of these changes as louder and louder hints are made about the coming changes to the financial system, for example, cryptocurrencies, including CBDC (Central Bank Digital Currency), and UBI (Universal Basic Income). We see foreshadowing in the emergence of the Metaverse, AI, robotics, the burgeoning of telehealth, and working from home, with technology used as a means to work from any location where internet connection is possible.

PARADIGM SHIFT

The next 20 years are a paradigm shift, unlike anything we have seen in our lifetimes. This cycle we are ending in Capricorn has been a preparation—a clearing. The new Aquarian cycle will challenge the limits of what it means to be human—and what it means to be in community with others. It will bring about shifts in technology, economies, agriculture, and education that we can’t even imagine at this time.

Where does this leave us? Do you want to be part of the Metaverse? What does it mean to be human when robots write poetry and create paintings? What are we to do as humans? What does it mean to be transhuman? There are some very real existential considerations to our humanity at play in the coming years. The energy emanating from Pluto may roll across the earth and our short lives with a power we experience at an unconscious level— yet knowing this consciously, we can decide what we do with it.

These next few years are telling. Many changes will come that will restructure our lives in profound ways that we can’t envision just yet. Yet, these changes won’t all be “bad!” For example, I could see the emergence of energy medicine as a much more accepted form of healing. There is potential for a deeper understanding of consciousness and the overlap between what we consider to be quantum physics and metaphysics. It’s time for a new season.
